Cet article est une étude des aspects commerciaux du débat sur l’abolition de la traite aux États-Unis durant la période de la jeune république. Il fait usage des travaux récents sur la traite transatlantique sous drapeau américain ainsi que sur le débat de l’esclavage durant cette période pour montrer que la question de la traite fut un élément moteur du débat national sur l’esclavage. Ce débat opposa deux groupes au Congrès mais également au sein des différents États, dont les intérêts dans leur soutien ou leur opposition à la traite étaient variés.
